[08/06/2010] Hook ladder

The hook ladders were and are still used by firefighter, even though they are being replaced by the safer and more efficient turntable ladders that are mounted directly on fire trucks, and by fire-proof stairwells. The hook ladder, also called pompier ladder, has two hooks on top, which hooks are used to grip window sills. Typically, they were used by firefighters who would enter the building, but did not have access to the stairway and had to use the ladder to climb another story by hooking that ladder to the window sill above. Apart from the hooks on top, quite often these ladders have “teeth” that are used to secure the ladder to the sill or other surface.

Even though no longer in use in most countries, the hook ladders are still used when firefighters are trained, and working a hook ladder requires skill and accuracy. These types of ladders were first used in the early 19th century and are believed to be invented by Lieutenant Chris Hoell.
