[07/06/2010] Basic scaffolding

The basic elements of scaffolding are tubes, which are called scaffolding standards, ledgers, and transoms. The scaffolding standards, which are also called uprights, are the tubes that are placed vertically and transfer the load of the entire scaffolding structure to the ground. They rest on base plates, which carry the entire load and each one of these base plates has a shank that holds the vertical tube. The scaffolding standards are connected by steel or aluminum tubes, which are called scaffolding ledgers. The third element, the scaffolding transoms, rest upon the ledgers at right angles; these scaffolding transoms are either main or intermediate with the former holding the standards in place, while the latter are positioned between the main transoms and give extra support for the wooden boards.

In order to further increase rigidity, cross braces are used and these are braces that are placed diagonally from one ledger to another; the transoms are connected to the standards by right-angle couplers or join ledgers, while single couplers or padlock couplers connect ledgers to bearing transoms; the swivel couplers are used to connect the scaffold tubes at any other angle.

All scaffolding elements are subject to standards and the maximum bay length, which is the greater space between two scaffolding standards, is 2.1metres, while the scaffolding width is 600mm; in the case of heavy duty scaffolding these standards are even stricter and the bay length can be further decreased to less than two meters, while the width can be increased to five or even six times the standard width. The standard lift height is 2m, while the space between the transoms depends on the thickness of the supported boards.
