[07/06/2010] Ladder variations
The rigid ladders come in many different variations, but most of them are made from the same material: tubular aluminum; wooden ladders are still commonly used even today and when working close to electric wires, ladders with fiberglass stiles are used. The rigid ladders are:
- Fixed ladders have stiles that are joined by rungs and these ladders have no moving parts and are firmly attached to a building or structure
- The step ladders are attached in the middle and look like an upside-down “V.” The folding ladder is a variation of the step ladder that allows usage in an uneven surface.
- Telescopic or extension ladders are the ones that have a few lengths that are either taken apart or slid together when the ladders are stored. At times these ladders can have a pulley system that allows the ladders to be extended from the ground
- The platforms steps are a kind of ladder that has a stepping platform at the top
- The orchard ladder is a tripod ladder that is typically used to access trees for fruit picking
- The roof ladders have hooks at the top, so they can be attached to the ridge of a roof
- Cat ladders are mainly used by construction workers when working on steep roofs
- Hook ladders are used mainly by firefighters and have a hook on top, which hook can grip a window sill
- The turntable ladder is the one that is normally found on a fire truck and is fixed on a rotating platform
- The bridge ladder is one that can be used as a small bridge and is laid horizontally
- Vertically rising ladder is used to access high points
